The skye came about as a result of a ship wreck in the early 1600's. It was the result of mating one of the survivors of the wreck, the Maltese, with a terrier. The skye terrier is a low profile dog with his body being twice as long as he is tall. They have a long, hard overcoat and a soft short undercoat. Their ears are always black. The Skye is very good natured and affectionate, however they are a little suspicious of strangers. The average height of the skye is 10 inches tall and the average weight is 25 lbs.
